Monsoon Update:  Given the extreme heatwave conditions affecting much of the nation, the India Meteorological Department has forecast a below-normal monsoon rainfall in June. This was somewhat of an unexpected development.

Even though there has been an abnormally high amount of rain in some areas, the weather department stated on Tuesday that June rainfall overall is predicted to be below average.

“Rainfall over the country as a whole for June 2024 (till June 18) was 64.5 mm which was 20 per cent less than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 80.6 mm,” the IMD said in a note. Of the subdivisions it oversees, it reported that eleven had normal to large excess rainfall and twenty-five had deficient to large deficient rainfall.

According to the weather service, portions of the northeast and the south peninsula of India are most likely to see monthly rainfall that ranges from average to above normal. There is a good chance of below rainfall in several parts of Northwest and adjacent Central India, as well as in some parts of Northeast India.

A Look At The Arrival Of Monsoon

IMD in its update on the monsoon's arrival, stated that on May 19, the Southwest Monsoon moved into some areas of the Nicobar Islands. By May 26, it had moved across most of the south and some areas of the Central Bay of Bengal in conjunction with Cyclone Remal.

The monsoon began simultaneously in Kerala and the northeastern regions on May 30. Kerala's onset occurred two days ahead and spread throughout Northeast India, six days before the regular date.

By June 12, the monsoon had moved north to cover the entire states of Kerala, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Goa, and Telangana, as well as most of South Maharashtra and some of South Chhattisgarh, South Odisha, the majority of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and the entire Northeastern states.
