Monsoon Updates: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a red alert for Pune and Satara. Meanwhile the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai till July 12. Pune is expected to receive very heavy rain in the next 24 hours. Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall on Monday morning, leading to traffic jams and waterlogging.
The recent weather patterns have showcased contrasting rainfall distributions across Maharashtra, highlighting Pune's unique meteorological dynamics. The catchment areas supplying water to the city's dams recorded up to 20 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 6 am on Monday. In stark contrast, the ghats of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and other regions experienced heavy downpours during the same period.
According to a scientist at IMD-Pune specialising in weather services, SD Sanap, Pune's geographical positioning on the leeward side of the Western Ghats significantly influences its rainfall patterns. Moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea encounter the Western Ghats, causing them to ascend, cool, and condense, resulting in substantial rainfall on the windward side. By the time these rain-bearing clouds move eastward towards Pune district, they have typically lost much of their moisture content, leading to comparatively lower rainfall amounts in the city, as per a TOI report.
Sanap further explained that Pune can expect occasional light to moderate rainfall over the next 3-4 days. Despite the forecast indicating an improvement, Pune's rainfall remains generally less intense compared to the coastal and ghat regions due to its geographic positioning.
Pune School Closure
In the wake of the rainfall warning issued by the RMC in Pune district on July 9, Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase has announced that all schools up to class 12 will remain closed on Tuesday, July 9, to avoid any untoward incidents and emergencies affecting schools.
However, school staff, including principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff, have been instructed to report to school during office hours to assist with disaster management efforts directed by the local administration.
