Mumbai has been hit by a severe rainstorm, with the Santacruz Observatory recording 268 millimetres of rainfall in the last 24 hours, the highest since 2019. The downpour has caused widespread disruption across the city, with reports of waterlogging, traffic jams and disturbances to local train services and flight operations.
According to the IMD, the heavy rain is expected to continue for the next few days. Forecasts indicate that the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions will be particularly affected from July 8 to July 10.
In a message on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Shinde stated that heavy rains have disrupted life in Mumbai. "There is a traffic jam on the roads, and railway services have also been affected. The railway administration is working to remove water from the tracks and restore traffic as soon as possible," he said.
"I have instructed all emergency agencies to remain on high alert. Citizens should only go out if absolutely necessary. I am also urging the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Police Administration, and Emergency Services to cooperate," CM Shinde added in his post.
On Monday, the heavy rain severely impacted suburban train services, causing delays and disruptions at several key stations. According to Railway officials, the track were announced unsafe at around 6:30 am due to which several train services were delayed and disrupted.
27 flights were diverted after runway operations were suspended due to heavy rains and low visibility. The suspension lasted from 2:22 am to 3:40 am, causing flights to be redirected to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore.
