Moon Sighting Time In Punjab: Married couples across India are observing Karwa Chauth, a traditional Hindu festival during which women fast from sunrise until moonrise, praying for their husbands’ health and long life.
As the festival approaches, markets throughout North India are bustling with festive energy.
Women, dressed in bright red sarees and adorned with bangles, sindoor (vermilion), and traditional jewellery, observe the fast with deep reverence. The Karwa Chauth ritual begins at sunrise and ends when the moon appears. At moonrise, women view the moon through a sieve, offer prayers and water to the moon god, and then break their fast by drinking water given by their husbands. The day ends with an evening puja that marks the conclusion of the ritual.

What Is Karwa Chauth?
The observance begins early in the morning with sargi, a pre-dawn meal prepared by the mother-in-law, which women eat before sunrise. Following this, they fast for the entire day without food or water as a symbol of love and commitment.
In the evening, women dress in traditional clothes and gather for a special prayer ceremony, during which they share folk stories about Veeravati, Karwa, and Savitri. Once the moon rises, they perform a ritual that involves looking at the moon through a sieve, praying, and then breaking their fast with water or food given by their husbands.
