The Mohan Yadav-led Madhya Pradesh government has imposed a liquor ban in 19 religious cities and gram panchayats of the state. The ban came into effect on April 1.
The announcement was made by the Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav and was approved in the Cabinet meeting held in Maheshwar, the city of Lokmata Ahilyabai, on January 24, 2025.
As the decision came into effect, all establishments that are involved in selling alcoholic beverages, including liquor shops and bars, will have to close their operations within the entire urban boundaries of several cities.
Where is liquor ban implemented?
The religious places where liquor is banned include Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maihar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Multai, Mandsaur, Orchha, Chitrakoot, Datia, Panna, Mandla, and Amarkantak.
The closure will also extend to the gram panchayat regions of Salkanpur, Barmankalan, Barmankhurd, Kundalpur, Bandakpur, and Linga.
Ujjain is the city where the Mahakaleshwar Temple is situated, while Amarkantak is considered revered as the Narmada River originates from there. Orchha is famous for the Ramraja Sarkar temple. Mandla’s Omkareshwar, Satdhara area will ban the sale completely.
In Datia, Pitambara Devipeeth is located, while in Jabalpur Bhedaghat area is a religious site.
What did CM Mohan Yadav say?
Regarding the decision, CM Yadav called it a historic step towards de-addiction by the state.
He said the step will be effective in 19 urban areas and gram panchayats of public faith and religious reverence.
The religious places where the decision to ban liquor has been taken include one Municipal Corporation, six Municipal Councils, six City Councils, and six Gram Panchayats.
Ban of meat, fish, egg in Maihar
Meanwhile, the Maihar district administration in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday announced a ban on the sale and purchase of meat, fish, and eggs within the limits of Maihar Nagar Palika during the holy festival of Navratri. The ban will remain in effect from March 30 to April 7.
