A judge in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district received a letter threatening to pay a ransom of Rs 500 crore if he wanted to “stay alive”. The name of the judge has not been revealed due to security concerns.

The letter was sent by Speed Post from Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj district to the court of a Civil Judge in Rewa, police said, as per an Indian Express report.

As per the letter, the ransom had to be sent to Badgad forest in Uttar Pradesh at 7.45 pm on September 1.

“If you want to stay alive, you will have to pay the money," the note read.

As per the report, Superintendent of Police Vivek Singh stated that the suspect was identified by a special investigation team. Singh added that police teams have been sent to UP to catch the accused.

“The judge has received a registered mail containing a threat and a demand for Rs 500 crore. On the basis of the letter, we have formed a team for investigation; a team has also been sent to UP. A suspect has been identified,” Singh said, as per an Indian Express report.

A case has been registered under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
