A Government Railway Police (GRP) head constable was suspended after a video went viral showing him kicking and punching a disabled person at Nagda railway station in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district on Tuesday. The assault, allegedly over the man sleeping on the platform, sparked widespread condemnation and swift action from senior officials.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning at Platform Number 1 of Nagda railway station, about 60 kilometres from Ujjain. The victim with disabilities was asleep with his bag beside him when GRP Head Constable Mansingh, dressed in civilian clothes, approached and began assaulting him. The passenger travelling in an AC coach witnessed the episode, recorded it on a mobile phone, and uploaded it online, after which the video spread rapidly across social media.

The footage shows Mansingh repeatedly slapping the man with disabilities and then kicking him as the victim, in tears, tries to collect his belongings and leave the platform. As the video gained traction, GRP Superintendent of Police Padmavilochan Shukla ordered the constable’s immediate suspension, taking action within hours of the clip going viral.

According to the NDTV report, Mansingh later claimed that the man was drunk and using abusive language, but the explanation did little to justify the excessive force seen in the video.

According to the suspension letter, the officer’s conduct damaged the reputation of the Railway Police among passengers and the public. It stated that he had displayed gross negligence, misconduct, and indiscipline in violation of general service conditions under Rule 64 of the Madhya Pradesh Police Regulations.

The order further mentioned that Mansingh has been attached to the Railway Police Line in Indore and cannot leave headquarters during his suspension without permission. Adding to the distress was the timing of the incident, it took place on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day meant to promote respect, inclusion, and equal rights.
