Karnataka Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah on Monday moved the high court against the order issued by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prosecute him in the alleged MUDA scam, ANI reported. This came amid Congress’ ardent protest across the state against Guv Gehlot’s move, accusing the latter of using his office for political vendetta.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has scheduled a Congress Legislature Party meeting for August 22. According to PTI sources, the Chief Minister is likely to update Congress MLAs on the facts and develop a strategy to address the situation both legally and politically. Karnataka's IT Minister Priyank Kharge stated that due to the ongoing controversy regarding the Governor's role, it was crucial to brief party MLAs on the issue.
Siddaramaiah is also likely to visit New Delhi to brief the party high command over the issue, HT reported citing a party leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Earlier, Karnataka deputy CM and Congress’ state unit chief DK Shivakumar said that rallies will be organised in all district headquarters across the state and all party leaders, and workers will participate in these protests.
“This is a murder of democracy, and we will protest it. We have instructed our party leaders to carry out peaceful protests and ensure that anti-social elements don’t infiltrate the rallies and create trouble,” he said.
What is MUDA scam?
The controversy revolves around allegations that in 2021, Siddaramaiah’s wife, Parvathi, was improperly granted compensatory sites in a premium Mysuru area under a 50:50 ratio scheme. The opposition claimed that the value of the allotted land was substantially higher than the value of the land acquired by MUDA from her. BJP leaders have estimated that the alleged scam could amount to between Rs 4,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore.
