Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Update: The bullet train project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad has achieved a major milestone with the completion of the railway platform level slab casting and structural steel installation at Vapi station in Gujarat, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said.

The NHSRCL said that roof casting and electrical installations were in progress. In a statement issued by the NHSRCL, which is developing the 508-km high-speed rail using Japanese Shinkansen technology, added that the approach viaduct towards Ahmedabad from Vapi is ready, and the work is underway towards Mumbai.

Vapi station in Dungra village, the NHSRCL said, will have a build-up area of 28,917 square metres. It will rise to 22 metres and will house various amenities.

The authorities are expecting to operationalise the first phase covering 348 kilometres in Gujarat by 2027.

Prior to that, in early 2026, the NHSRCL is likely to conduct trial runs on a 50-km stretchbetween Surat and Bilimora with Shinkansen E3 and E5 series trains. The said series of trains is designed to run at a speed of 320 kmph.

In February 2024, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the expected opening of the said 50-km stretch by August 2026.

Recently, Vaishnaw posted a video of the viaduct stating that the 300 km viaduct was completed with the launch of a girder in Surat. This marks 60 per cent completion of track-related work.

The entire route is likely to get operationalised by 2028. It will have 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

Except for Mumbai, all stations are elevated. Mumbai will be an underground bullet train station. The project is high-cost infusive with a total outlay of Rs 1.08 lakh crore. According to shareholding, the Centre will pay Rs 10,000 crore to the NHSRCL. Maharashtra and Gujarat will pay Rs 5,000 crore each.

Out of a total 598 km route, the longest 384.04 km is in Gujarat, followed by 155.76 km in Maharashtra and 4.3 km in Dadar and Nagar Haveli.
