UK Citizen Detained: An Indian-origin UK citizen, who was unlawfully detained at the Mumbai airport back in 2019, has finally seen the light of justice after 6 years. A court had earlier ordered in his favour but still there had been no progress on his acquittal.

The Maharashtra State Human Rights (SHRC) has now ordered that a compensation of Rs 2 lakh be paid to the detained passenger. This amount will be recovered directly from the salary of the police officer who has been held responsible for the incident. It also asked the Home Department to initiate disciplinary actions against the officer.

Inspector Shailaja who was then posted at Halsuru Gate station has been asked to pay the compensation amount of Rs 2 lakh. However, she claimed that she was not present at the time and place when the incident took place. She argued that the lookout circular had been issued during her predecessor’s tenure.

But according to an independent investigation conducted by the SHRC, the police station had already been intimidated about the stay order. Despite this, Inspector Shailaja had instructed her subordinates to travel to Mumbai. As a result, Inspector Shailaja’s mishandling of the case led Prasad to languish in jail for the past 6 years.

What Is The Incident?

Based on a report by the Times of India, the case dates back to February 19, 2019, when Krishna Prasad, a UK passport holder, arrived at Mumbai airport around 7 am to board a flight to London. But at the immigration counter, he found out that a lookout circular has been issued against him in connection with a 2016 case filed in connection with cruelty and criminal intimidation.

A stay order from the Karnataka High Court had already halted the proceedings of the case back in 2018. But the immigration authorities prevented him from leaving despite producing the official proof. Later that afternoon, at 12:04 pm, Bengaluru’s Halsuru Gate Women’s Police Station confirmed his detention via email.

Prasad was kept in custody till February 20 after two policemen from the Halsuru Gate station arrived in Mumbai. The detained man again produced the High Court’s stay order. Instead of paying heed to his earnest requests, the authorities forced him to sign a statement and contacted his sister to book him a ticket to Bengaluru.

Prasad then approached the Human Rights Commission over wrongful detention, harassment, and violation of his rights. He said that his air ticket, worth Rs 57,000, was also wasted.
