Central Railways has initiated a security enhancement project in the suburban area of the Mumbai division by installing advanced CCTV cameras with face recognition technology to bolster safety. The first camera in this series was recently set up at Byculla railway station, funded by the Nirbhaya Fund.

At present, only six stations within the Mumbai division, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kurla, Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Kalyan, are equipped with integrated security systems featuring high-tech CCTV cameras with face recognition. Other suburban stations rely on older CCTV technology, which will be replaced as part of this initiative.

The plan involves installing a total of 2,509 high-tech CCTV cameras across 76 stations in the Mumbai division, with 297 of them having face recognition capabilities. The installation has already commenced at significant stations like Masjid, Byculla, Chinchpokali, and Curry Road, with the first phase expected to be completed within two weeks.

These face recognition cameras will act as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers, enhance monitoring, enforce compliance with railway regulations, and ensure a safer travel experience for passengers. Data from these cameras will be transmitted to a unified control command centre for constant surveillance.

The technology can recognise individuals in a database, aiding in the identification of known criminals. A multi-layered monitoring network will oversee these cameras, and data will be securely stored for 30 days for post-event analysis and investigations. The deployment of CCTV cameras will cover various areas in the stations, such as waiting halls, reservation counters, parking areas, entrances/exits, platforms, foot-over bridges, and booking offices.

This project is part of a larger plan to install 6,122 CCTV cameras across 364 Central Railway stations, supported by the Nirbhaya Fund with the project estimated to cost around Rs 82 crore and completion scheduled in the next 12 to 18 months.
