Mumbai and its neighbouring cities have been warned of heavy to heavy rainfall for next four to five days, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather body has sounded an orange alert in this regard. Residents have been advised to stay alert. Mumbai, Raigad, Palghar, Thane and Ratnagiri districts of Konkan are the cities of Maharashtra where the orange alert has been issued from August 24 (Saturday) onwards.

IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in some areas of Mumbai city and its suburbs in the next 3-4 hours. "Citizens are advised to be cautious," the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in an SMS alert to citizens on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, the met office has issued a Yellow alert for Pune and Satara districts of western Maharashtra and Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts of Vidarbha for Saturday.

It should be noted that an orange alert is issued for heavy rainfall exceeding 64.5 mm in 24 hours. This intensity rain can cause trouble to residents, which include flooding in low-lying areas, disrupting normal life. The IMD sounds a yellow alert when it expects thunderstorms, lightning, light-to-moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h. With pair possibilities of thunderstorms, and upto moderate rainfall in the city, the met office issued a yellow alert in several districts, except for some in western Maharashtra and Marathwada. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for parts of Konkan and western Maharashtra on August 25 and 26.

Reason For The Heavy Rainfall

A low-pressure area over northern West Bengal and nearby parts of northeast Jharkhand, along with another low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Maharashtra coast, is expected to bring rain to most parts of Maharashtra over the next 48 hours, according to an IMD scientist.
