In a major update for the residents of Mumbai, the Mumbai Metro is set to begin work on four lines connecting key areas like Navi Mumbai and Thane within a year. Once completed, it will augment the connectivity for the citizens of these areas in the Maharashtra capital.

Recently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) presented a budget of Rs 40,187 crore for the financial year 2025-26. Out of this, 87 per cent, Rs 35,151 crore, was allocated for infrastructure projects, highlighting MMRDA's approach towards expansion.

Four metro projects to start within FY26

The four key projects, the work on which will be started within this financial year, are:

Mumbai Metro Line 5: Line 5, popularly known as Thane Bhiwandi Kalyan, has a total length of 24.9 km, having 15 metro stations. The MMRDA is planning to expand it from Durgadi (Kalyan) to Ulhasnagar.

As per reports, the line will cut the travel time by 50-70 per cent. As per reports,  Rs 1,579.99 crore has been allocated to the Line 5 project.

The Line 5 will have interconnections at Metro Route - 4 (Wadala to Kasarwadavali) and the proposed Metro Route - 12 (Kalyan to Taloja) and the Central Railway.

Mumbai Metro Line 10: The work on line 10 to expand it from Gaymukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) will also start this financial year.

Line 13: The MMRDA is also expected to start work on Line 13 to provide further connectivity from Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) to Virar within a year.

Line 14: The 38-km-long route from Kanjurmarg to Badlapur has 35 stations and will soon see the commencement of work. It is expected that the MMRDA will start the work by the end of this financial year.
