Amid the CJP protests being held across several states seeking the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged exam irregularities, a viral video from a student protest in Mumbai has sparked outrage and drawn political criticism. The video allegedly shows a Mumbai police officer groping a female protester.
The video, recorded during a protest in Mumbai’s Dadar area, shows a police officer in plain clothes allegedly grabbing and dragging a woman protester in an objectionable manner.
The clip was shared by Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad on social media platform X. Sharing the video, Gaikwad wrote, "What is this behaviour, Mumbai Police? Why is a male cop manhandling a young female protestor like this? Why isn't he letting his female colleagues handle this? What action will be taken against him? This is unacceptable," she posted, tagging Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in her X post.

The Mumbai Police, however, defended the officer, stating that the video was being misinterpreted and presented irresponsibly.
Responding to Gaikwad’s post, the Mumbai Police said the officer seen in the video was attempting to move a male protester aside when the woman came between them.
"Ma’am, please note, this is being irresponsibly misinterpreted – the official, while managing law & order there, was trying to hold on to a male protestor when a lady unknowingly stepped in between while he was looking away. Being a public figure, you are expected to verify facts before attributing any meaning based on a video. Senior officers have verified all the facts and minutely assessed the video to derive facts."

The Mumbai Police further said that the officer was looking in the opposite direction when the woman protester came into the frame. It added that senior officers had reviewed the footage and found no misconduct in the officer’s actions.
What happened?
The video shows the plain-clothed officer moving towards a group of protesters. He appears to be trying to restrain a male protester but, during the commotion, ends up grabbing a woman.
In the initial part of the video, the officer appears to be looking away while holding the woman protester. However, in the later portion, he is seen looking towards her while continuing to hold and drag her. The footage shows that he does not immediately remove his hands from her.

The incident comes two days after the Mumbai Police suspended a member of personnel who was caught on camera allegedly threatening detained protesters with a fake drug case.
