Mumbai-Pune Expressway Corridor: Maharashtra commuters could soon benefit from faster travel as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed a third Mumbai-Pune express corridor aimed at cutting travel time between the two cities to around 90 minutes.

The proposed project includes a 130-km greenfield expressway to be built parallel to the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 15,000 crore. The NHAI has already invited tenders for the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR).

The new expressway will be an 8-lane high-speed corridor equipped with modern safety features. It will begin from Chowk in Raigad district and connect to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) corridor. The route will end at Shivare village in Bhor taluka, where it will join with the Pune ring road.

A major highlight of the project is its proposed direct link between Pune and Mumbai’s Atal Setu. As per an NDTV report, the corridor will allow travellers from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and the international airport to travel to Pune without depending on the heavily congested current expressway.

The new route is aimed at reducing traffic pressure on the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway while ensuring smoother, faster and safer travel. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Pune and further boost economic growth in the region.

The corridor is also expected to improve Maharashtra’s logistics network by enabling faster transportation of raw materials and finished products, supporting future industrial and trade growth.

For regular commuters as well as transport operators, the project is expected to make travel more efficient and less time-consuming. Construction work is likely to begin after the DPR and tendering process are finalised.
