Long long-awaited Mumbai-Goa highway is set to become operational by June this year. Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the long-delayed Highway will be completed 100 per cent by mid-2025. The Highway is expected to bring relief to daily commuters and Konkan-bound travellers. The project will drastically reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Goa from 12 hours to 6 hours. Legal disputes, compensation and late acquisition delayed the project.
"There were numerous difficulties with the Mumbai-Goa highway. But do not worry, we will complete the road 100 per cent by this June," Gadkari declared on Monday (14 April) at an event organised in Mumbai. The minister was speaking at Vasant Vyakhyanmala, organised by Amar Hind Mandal, a social organisation, in the Dadar area in Mumbai. The four-laning of the 466km Goa Highway in Maharashtra is expected to have no toll booths.
The transport Minister also affirmed that physical toll booths would be removed across the country and the union government will come up with new toll policy.
"The central government will soon introduce a new toll policy. I will not speak much about it now, but within the next 15 days, a new policy will be announced. Once implemented, there will be no reason for anyone to complain about tolls," he stated. Gadkari added that the new system will include an automated deduction of tolls.
Expressing confidence in India’s infrastructure development, Gadkari said, "In the next two years, India's road infrastructure will be better than that of the United States."
Gadkari also mentioned the challenges that caused the delay. "There were fights among brothers, cases in courts, and endless complications in providing compensation for land. But those issues have now been resolved, and the work on the Mumbai-Goa Highway has gained momentum," he said.
