ECI FAQs: The number of voters in India now stands at 99.1 crore, witnessing a whopping surge from 96.88 crore during the Lok Sabha polls last year. This meteoric rise has been attributed to the young population entering the fray to exercise their franchise. The electoral roll now looks more youthful with 21.7 crore electors in the 18-29 age group, as per the Election Commission.
The electoral roll also looks more gender-balanced as the ratio has improved to 954 women voters per 1000 male voters in 2025. This ratio increased from 940 in 2023 to 948 in 2024.
The poll body, in its data released in 2024, announced a significant improvement in the gender ratio, highlighting the growing role of women in the electoral process. This positive trend can be attributed to the women-centric policies introduced by political parties in the lead-up to elections across various states. Over 2.63 crore new electors were added to the electoral roll in 2024, of which approximately 1.41 crore were female voters, surpassing the number of newly enrolled male voters (1.22 crore) by more than 15 per cent.

While announcing the Delhi assembly poll schedule on January 7, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar had said India would soon create a new record of one billion-plus voters.
"Electoral rolls were released yesterday (January 6). We are crossing 99 crore voters... We are going to be a nation of one billion voters very soon, which will be another record in voting," he had said."After the declaration of SSR (special summary revision) by Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Punjab, which will be declaring SSR results today, we will be crossing 99 crore voters for the first time," the CEC had said.
