Naxalites killed a man in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Wednesday on suspicion of him being a police informer, officials said on Thursday. The victim, identified as Madkam Bheema, was attacked at his home around 9 pm in Pujarikanker village under Usoor police station limits. He was dragged outside and assaulted with sharp weapons.
Police stated that Bhima died on the spot, and the incident was reported to Usoor police station on Thursday. A case has been registered under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and legal proceedings are underway. Bhima’s killing brings the number of civilians killed in Maoist-related violence in the Bastar region this year to 38.
“This was a barbaric and deliberate act meant to create fear. There is a longstanding pattern of Maoists targeting innocent civilians under false suspicions. We will pursue every legal avenue to bring the perpetrators to justice,” a senior Bijapur police official said.
In response to the killing, security forces have intensified patrolling in the area and are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Maoist Leadership Targeted Amid Intensified Counter-Insurgency Operations
1. The Union government has set a target to eliminate Maoism from the country by next year.
2. Between January 1 and September 22, security forces killed Maoist leaders in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
3. The killing of Maoist chief Nambala Kesava Rao, alias Basavaraju, on May 20 was a major success against the Left-wing insurgency in years.
