In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking re-elections for 20 assembly seats in Haryana. The court also refused to impose a stay on the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini.
The petition, filed on Wednesday, alleged discrepancies and suspicious results concerning electronic voting machines (EVMs). The petitioner urged the court to halt the oath-taking ceremony, citing concerns over the integrity of the election process.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, while dismissing the plea, warned that the court could impose penalties for such requests. He also noted that the court might consider further hearings on this matter at a later date.
Notably, the Congress party raised objections regarding the election results, formally submitting their grievances to the Election Commission (EC). In a written complaint, Congress alleged that during the counting process on October 8, some EVMs displayed battery capacity of 99 per cent, raising questions about their reliability.
"Following our memorandum submitted to the Election Commission on October 9, we have now presented a document outlining serious and clear irregularities in the election process in 20 assembly constituencies in Haryana. We hope the Election Commission will take this matter seriously and issue appropriate directives," Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had posted on X.
The 20 assembly constituencies, where Congress candidates have raised complaints, include Narnaul, Karnal, Dabwali, Rewari, Hodal (SC), Kalka, Panipat City, Indri, Badkhal, Faridabad NIT, Nalwa, Rania, Pataudi (SC), Palwal, Ballabgarh, Barwala, Uchana Kalan, Gharaunda, Kosli and Badshahpur.

In the recent Haryana Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory in 48 seats, while Congress won 37 seats. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and independent candidates captured two and three seats, respectively. With this outcome, the BJP attained a clear majority. Nayab Saini took oath as Haryana CM on Thursday. Besides, 12 BJP MLAs took the oath as ministers.
