NEET-UG 2024 Exam: The Supreme Court on Monday commenced hearing on a batch of pleas related to the alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) examination. A counsel representing the NEET-UG aspirants informed the top court that the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the prestigious exam, has admitted to a paper leak and the dissemination of the ‘leaked question paper' through WhatsApp. This comes two days after the NTA released city- and centre-wise results of the medical entrance exam, after accusations of paper leak and inordinate inflation of marks.

According to the Supreme Court’s case listing for July 22, the pleas related to NEET-UG irregularities will be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The top court is set to hear 40 petitions including the pleas filed by the NTA seeking transfer of cases pending against it in various high courts on the NEET-UG row to the apex court to avoid a multiplicity of litigations.

Earlier on July 11, the Supreme Court court adjourned the hearing of pleas regarding the medical entrance exam, including those seeking cancellation of the exam, re-test and probe into alleged malpractices in the conduct of NEET-UG 2024, as the apex court had not yet received the responses from the NTA and the Centre.

While hearing the batch of petitions on July 8, the top court noted that the sanctity of the NEET-UG 2024 has been "breached". However, in its affidavit to the apex court, the Centre had said that analysis of the NEET UG 2024 result showed that apart from several wrongdoings at some centres, there was no indication of "mass malpractice" or any localised set of candidates scoring abnormally high marks.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam, which was conducted by NTA on May 5 across 4,750 centres for nearly 24 lakh students, faced the ire over allegations of paper leaks and questionable grace marks. The results were questioned as an unprecedented 67 students have attained a perfect score of 720.
