The UP police sounded alert across seven districts of the state on Wednesday amid violence in Nepal’s Bahraich district, HT quoted the police as saying. The vigil at the India-Nepal border was enhanced by the UP police and SSB. Prashant Kumar, special DG (law and order), said joint patrolling by the UP police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), was intensified across Bahraich and six districts which share borders with Nepal. He also said the movement across the border was restricted to prevent violence from spreading in India. He said together with SSB, a close watch on the situation was being made.

As many as Five districts of Uttar Pradesh share 599-km borders with Nepal. This includes Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddarthnagar and Maharajganj and two districts of the western region including Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri.  

A curfew was unleashed in the Nepalese city of Nepalgunj on Tuesday over fears of communal violence in the area. Security was heightened over the weekend after a Hindu boy posted a status against Muslims. This fuelled a protest by the Muslim community, who burned tires on the streets blocking vehicular movement.

Nepal adopted its first full democratic charter in 2015 declaring it a secular nation. The new constitution defines Nepal as a secular country, despite widespread protests for it to be declared a Hindu state.

A clause stating "Religious and cultural freedom, with the protection of religion and culture practised since ancient times" has angered some people who say it favours Hinduism.
