Delhi Train News: New Delhi Railway Station is set for a major redevelopment, with construction work likely to begin soon. The Indian Railways has initiated preparations for the first phase, which includes building a Multi-Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) on the Paharganj side and reconstructing platforms 1 to 9.

Once completed, the station will offer airport-like amenities for passengers. Authorities believe the project will significantly improve crowd management and streamline traffic around the station, making it easier for passengers to arrive and depart.

Over 100 Trains Likely To Be Shifted

However, the construction activity will impact train operations. As per a report from the Delhi railway division, more than 100 trains are expected to be shifted to other stations during the redevelopment period. So far, six trains — including the Purushottam Express — have already been scheduled to run from different terminals. More changes are expected to be announced soon.

Demolition And Drain-Shift Work In Progress

Railway officials confirmed that soil testing work has started and surveys for demolishing nearby railway buildings — including Rail Niwas, the Railway Club and the Junior Engineer’s office on State Entry Road — are complete. Demolition is expected to begin shortly. In addition, the process of shifting a municipal drain from the construction site is underway.

Forest Clearance Expected Soon

Earlier, the project faced delays due to pending permission from the forest department to cut and relocate trees from the site. However, approval is now expected, which will help speed up the work. Officials have also indicated that part of the station building on the Paharganj side will be demolished by February next year.

Platform Reconstruction In Two Phases

The reconstruction of platforms will be done in two stages — platforms 1 to 5 first, followed by platforms 6 to 9. Train shifting is crucial before this process begins. Since stations like Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar Terminal are already busy, rerouting trains poses a challenge.

Bijwasan, Tughlakabad Terminals To Handle Extra Load

To manage the load, work at the under-construction Bijwasan Terminal is being accelerated. New terminals are also being planned at Tughlakabad and Adarsh Nagar, where two additional platforms, washing lines and stabling lines will be developed.

Railway authorities plan to run trains towards eastern India from Anand Vihar and Old Delhi, while services heading south and west will operate from Hazrat Nizamuddin and Tughlakabad. Northern-bound trains may be shifted to Sarai Rohilla and Adarsh Nagar, with some services operating from smaller stations such as Shakur Basti, Safdarjung and Delhi Cantonment.
