New Delhi Station Stampede: Amid the ongoing investigation in the New Delhi railway station stampede case, the railways announced the names of the high administrative group officials to probe the causes behind the stampede. The railways stated that Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway Narsingh Deo and Principal Chief Security Commissioner of Northern Railway Pankaj Gangwar are the members of the committee.
The committee has started its inquiry and has asked the railways officials to secure all video footage of the New Delhi Railway Station. Narsingh Deo assured that a high level investigation is ongoing and more details will be provided once the report is prepared.
“The Railway Ministry has formed a high-level inquiry committee. This committee includes me, Narsingh (BCCM, Northern Railway), and Security Commissioner Shri Gangwar. We have started our investigation this morning. We are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting a thorough inquiry. We have also inspected the site and will speak to witnesses to understand the sequence of events. Once the report is prepared, we will be able to provide more details. Every effort will be made to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” Deo was quoted as saying by the Economic Times.
Besides, several reports citing LNJP Hospital sources said that the majority of the patients had lower limb injuries, adding that most of them were discharged after primary treatment. "The majority of the patients have lower limb injuries, and few have bone injuries. Four people are under observation and the rest have been discharged after primary treatment. Apart from this, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and also announced ex gratia for the kin of the deceased who belonged to the state. "The CM has expressed condolences over the casualties in the stampede at the New Delhi railway station. He is deeply saddened by the deaths of Bihar natives in the incident, and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the immediate family members of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 for those who are injured," a statement issued by the Bihar CMO said.
Delhi Police on Sunday stated that the incident happened because of a confusion in the announcement of the trains with identical names. The announcement of the Prayagraj Special arriving at Platform 16 led to confusion because the Prayagraj Express was already at Platform 14. People who couldn't reach to their train at Platform 14 thought their train was arriving at Platform 16 leading to the stampede. Additionally, there were 4 trains heading to Prayagraj, out of which 3 were delayed, causing unexpected overcrowding, Delhi police stated.
