GST 2.0: Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as ‘#NextGenGST Reforms’. The Modi government’s GST 2.0 came into effect today, September 22.

In a post on X, Shah wrote, "Modi government's gift of #NextGenGST reform to all the mothers and sisters of the country on the auspicious occasion of Navratri! Modi's promise to the countrymen regarding GST reform has been implemented across the entire country starting today. In this GST, historic reductions have been made in taxes on more than 390 goods.”

He added that the GST reductions in the medical and health sector, among others, will increase the savings of people in the country.

"In areas such as food and household items, home building and materials, automobiles, agriculture, services, toys, sports and handicrafts, education, medical and health, insurance, etc., unprecedented relief in GST will bring joy to the lives of the countrymen and also increase their savings," Shah said.

Taking a cue from Narendra Modi’s speech on the eve of the launch of the new GST tax, Amit Shah highlighted the commitment of the government to boost indigenous manufacturing in areas like agriculture. The Union Home Minister also asked citizens to strengthen self-reliance and adopt indigenous products in daily use.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation on the eve of the auspicious occasion of Navratri and said the mantra of ‘Swadeshi’ has received a positive boost in the country. He also urged the nation to work collectively towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat India.

"This time, this auspicious occasion of Navratri is very special. Along with the GST Savings Festival, the mantra of Swadeshi is going to receive new energy during this period. Let us come together in collective efforts for the fulfilment of the resolve for a developed and self-reliant India," wrote the Prime Minister in a post on X.

The ruling government also went on to launch an offensive against the claims of Congress and other opposition leaders who have called the new reforms a ‘simple bandaid on the deep wound of the common people.’

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said, “I think Mallikarjun Kharge needs to understand the entire taxation system once again. There is an economic principle — lesser the tax, higher the revenue. This principle is accepted across the world. In the time to come, all State governments and Central government will get revenue through this. Kharge ji has little knowledge, so he is unable to understand this math. Since he just has to criticise PM Modi, he is saying this."
