What Is New Parliament Building Row Between Centre And Opposition

As PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28, the government and opposition have been trading barbs over the inaugural function. The opposition has accused the Central government of "constitutional impropriety" by not requesting the President of India to open the building.

The opposition parties have also criticised the Centre over the choice of the inauguration date which is also the birth anniversary of India's freedom struggle VD Savarkar. They have also said that PM Modi's decision to inaugurate the building without President Droupadi Murmu "insults the high office of the President and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution".

How Will The New Parliament Building Be Inaugurated

PM Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla will lead the inauguration ceremony of the new parliament on Sunday. The inauguration will take place in two phases, news agency ANI reported citing sources.

The rituals ahead of the inaugural ceremony will begin in the morning and are likely to be held in a pandal (canopy) near the Gandhi statue in Parliament, the sources told ANI. Along with PM Modi and Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Hariwansh and some senior ministers in the government are likely to be part of the ceremony.

The dignitaries will tour the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chamber locations in the new structure following the pujas. It is likely that the sacred 'Sengol' will be installed in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker's chair, after performing some rituals.
