As the new Parliament building is scheduled to be inaugurated on Sunday, May 28, at least 20 parties have boycotted the inaugural function including Congress, AAP, and TMC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament Building on May 28 in New Delhi. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament Building on December 10, 2020. The construction of the building got delayed due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.
On Monday, as many as 20 opposition parties announced their decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building by PM Modi. After the opposition's decision to boycott May 28 event, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted by appealing to them to reconsider their decision. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said not politics the event.
What Is New Parliament Building Row
As PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28, the government and opposition have been trading barbs over the inaugural function. The opposition parties have accused the Central government of "constitutional impropriety" by not requesting the President of India to open the building. The opposition has also criticised the Centre over the choice of the inauguration date which is also the birth anniversary of India's freedom struggle VD Savarkar.
Expressing his displeasure over the inauguration of the new Parliament building by PM Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the President of India is its highest constitutional authority.
"The parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India, and the President of India is its highest constitutional authority. She alone represents government, opposition, and every citizen alike," Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on Twitter.
