Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday kicked off the two-day BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, as leaders gathered to discuss key global and economic issues, including the impact of the wars in Ukraine and West Asia on developing economies.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13 under its 2026 chairship, with the grouping entering its third decade.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi welcomed BRICS leaders at Bharat Mandapam, with warm exchanges and candid moments marking the opening of the summit.

PM Modi was seen sharing warm moments with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also shared a picture interacting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, with Putin standing beside them.

In another picture, PM Modi and Putin were seen walking together and smiling.

PM Modi said BRICS has established a distinct identity on the global stage and stressed that the grouping is not against anyone, remarks seen as a message to the US and other Western powers.

BRICS comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. BRICS partner countries are Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
