Yash is a resident of Kanjhawala, Delhi, and has completed his graduation from Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi. He is currently pursuing his studies in the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi.

The Satya Niketan incident

Dabas’ demand on hostel and PG safety comes after a five-storey building housing a boys’ paying guest hostel in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed on September 6.

The illegal PG accommodation named “Hostel Daze” collapsed at around 1:30 pm while repair work was being carried out in the basement and ground-floor areas. Seven people were killed in the incident, including five students, while several others were injured. A rescue operation continued for roughly 27 hours.

The building was reportedly decades old, and questions were raised about unauthorised construction and building-safety oversight. The MCD also sealed an adjoining structure that was found to be in poor condition.

Satya Niketan is a major student-housing hub around DU South Campus, where many students live in private PGs and rented accommodations. Students prefer staying in Satya Niketan due to the close proximity to campus. However, the PG collapse has triggered wider questions about student safety on campus.

Since the building collapse, student organisations have included student housing, structural safety, unauthorised construction, affordability and civic regulation in their manifesto.
