Delhi Students Accommodation Facility: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced plans to provide hostel facilities to 10,000 students in the national capital. The announcement comes days after a five-storey paying guest building collapsed in Satya Niketan, killing seven people, including five Delhi University students. The government has already started work on the project, with the proposed facilities aimed at providing students with safer and supportive accommodation while pursuing higher education in Delhi.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the safety of private paying guest accommodations and student housing in the capital. The Delhi government has identified a location for the proposed hostel project and is working on a policy framework for its implementation. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has intensified action against unauthorised and unsafe structures following the Satya Niketan incident.

What Happened At Satya Niketan PG Building?

The Satya Niketan incident involved the collapse of a five-storey building being used as student PG accommodation. Seven people lost their lives, including five Delhi University students. Preliminary investigations have focused on repair and construction work carried out in the basement, along with other structural concerns.

Police have also been investigating allegations of unauthorised construction and modifications made to the building over the years.

Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi intensified action against unauthorised and unsafe structures across the city. According to figures reported on September 10, 58 buildings had been demolished, 24 properties sealed and 31 demolition orders issued.

Delhi Government Plans Hostels For 10,000 Students

The Delhi government plans to initially provide fully equipped hostel facilities to 10,000 students. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, work on the project is already underway.

The proposed hostels are expected to address concerns about the shortage of safe and affordable accommodation for students who come to Delhi for higher education. The government has also identified a location for the project and is currently preparing the policy framework.

MCD Surveys PG Buildings Across Delhi

The Satya Niketan collapse has also prompted a wider assessment of student accommodation in the capital. The MCD has been surveying PG accommodations to identify buildings that may pose safety risks.

An MCD survey covering around 1,355 PG buildings found three visibly dangerous structures. The civic body's action against unauthorised structures has also highlighted concerns regarding construction, structural safety and regulatory compliance in private student housing.

The incident left students staying in nearby PGs concerned about their own safety. Some Delhi University colleges opened their facilities to students affected by the collapse, while the demand for safe and affordable accommodation remained a concern.

Supreme Court To Examine Student Accommodation Safety

The developments have also brought wider attention to the safety of PGs and private hostels in Delhi. The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a petition seeking a comprehensive safety audit of PGs, private hostels and student accommodation located around colleges and universities in the capital.

The proposed hostel project by the Delhi government is therefore being viewed against the broader concerns surrounding student accommodation, structural safety and regulatory compliance in Delhi.
