Former Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, 1975 batch former IAS officer who served under ex-chief minister Sheila Dixit, allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Noida who died on September 6. However, the noida police he had commited a suicide was confirmed after recovering suicide note on tuesday.
Following the completion of the necessary proceedings and post-mortem examination, Mehta’s body was handed over to his family. He was cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Monday.
The Noida Police also recovered a purported suicide note in which Mehta cited his “mental and health issues” as the reasons behind the extreme step. The 74-year-old’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his Sector 82 residence in Noida on September 6.
During his career, Mehta held several important positions in the Delhi government and also served as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). He oversaw several key transport, power and civic infrastructure initiatives in the national capital.
Mehta was the chief secretary of Delhi for over three years during Sheila Dixit's tenure. The Commonwealth Games in Delhi were organised in 2010 during his tenure. He served in the Delhi government in different capacities and was also the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
He took over as Chief Secretary in 2007 and retired in November 2010. Mehta was credited with overseeing the execution of several key transport, power and civic infrastructure projects in the city.
The former bureaucrat’s death is being investigated by the Noida Phase-2 police station. The Noida Police are also examining the suicide note, forensic findings and other evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding Mehta’s death.
