'Women Put Into Cages Called Protection': LinkedIn User Shares How Parents Denied Her LSR Admission Over Safety Fears

Days after the LSR gang-rape incident, a user shared a post over the safety of women in the capital, where she wrote how her parents refused to send her to the college even as she got selected. The LinkedIn user, named Kumudini Rathore, said she was refused joining Delhi's Lady Shriram College, as her parents feared about her safety.

Writing a hard-hitting post on LinkedIn, the woman said what felt “irrational at that time” makes sense now. She added that there was a time when she felt that her parents’ decision was somewhat “unfair” to her. However, the concern “sounds real” now.

The post highlights major concerns

Sharing the post she wrote, “I cried SO badly the day my parents refused to send me to Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi. It felt like the worst day of my life.” “I was a merit holder, and I had done everything right to earn a seat in one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. For me, it wasn’t just a college; it was something I had genuinely worked for."

She further explained She continued that “going to LSR was the outcome of years of doing the ‘right’ things. But my parents STILL SAID NO." For a long time, the woman believed “they were wrong."

“Today, when my entire feed is filled with what happened near LSR, I’m not so sure anymore. Because now the fear they had doesn’t sound irrational. It sounds real."

She has raised questions about how society responds to incidents involving women’s safety. “Every time something this horrific happens, why is the response to CONTROL ACCESS of women instead of fixing the system?" The woman shifted focus on accountability and the significance of ensuring the safety of women, rather than limiting their lives and caging them for "safety".

“We Don’t Deny Women Opportunities; We Just Make the World Unsafe," she added. “We keep redesigning women’s lives around danger instead of eliminating the danger itself," she said. It is always the same script, just repeated with a different headline. And that is the part we rarely question. Because if a girl like me can do everything right, earn her place at a college like LSR and still have to give it up because a city feels UNSAFE to her parents then what exactly are we working towards? What is the point of merit and doing everything ‘right’ if, at the end of it, fear still gets the final say?"

Rathore continued, "Women nowadays aren’t denied opportunities directly anymore; rather, it makes the world so unsafe that they themselves 'give up'." “We don’t cage women with rules. We build invisible cages around them and call it PROTECTION. And the worst part is, over time, it starts to feel normal. Because this was never just about one college or one city. It is about how easily a woman’s world can be REDUCED, even after she has done everything to expand it."
