Once a relatively little-known religious destination, Kainchi Dham has seen a sharp rise in visitors after the hit film Hanuman Ansh brought the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba to a wider audience. With thousands of tourists and devotees now flocking to the shrine, Uttarakhand authorities are considering tighter entry and crowd-management measures to prevent the region from being overwhelmed.

The rush was particularly high over the past weekend, when the number of visitors at Kainchi Dham reportedly crossed 50,000 in a single day, more than double the 20,000-25,000 people the existing arrangements can comfortably handle.

Registration, Visitor Cap Under Consideration

The administration is considering making registration compulsory for those visiting Kainchi Dham and limiting daily footfall to around 20,000-25,000. The proposal has not yet received final approval.

The Kumaon Commissioner has directed the Nainital District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police to prepare a detailed plan and submit it to the state government.

Authorities are also examining whether access to Nainital and Kainchi Dham during peak periods should largely be restricted to visitors with prior bookings. If implemented, tourists arriving without confirmed accommodation or other required bookings could face difficulties entering the area.

The proposed measures are aimed at preventing a repeat of the weekend rush, when roads, parking facilities and other local infrastructure came under heavy pressure.

Traffic Flow Takes Priority

The administration is also focusing on the impact of the tourist surge on the highway passing through Kainchi Dham. The route is important for traffic travelling towards Almora, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, and officials want to ensure that vehicles heading beyond the shrine are not caught in tourist congestion.

Separate routes are planned around Kainchi Dham to regulate visitor movement, while shuttle services are being considered for crowded periods, particularly weekends.

The Circle Officer and Sub-Divisional Magistrate will hold meetings ahead of weekends to assess the expected footfall and finalise traffic and crowd-control arrangements. Officials have also been instructed to keep the highway beyond Kainchi Dham clear for through traffic.

River Bathing Banned, Businesses Under Watch

Bathing in the Shipra River near Kainchi Dham has also been banned by the officials. Action will be taken against those who are found to have flouted the ban, said the Forest Department.

Meanwhile, hotels and shops in the region are also being cautioned to resist charging over the odds. The rates they are entitled to charge must be conspicuously displayed. Inspections and raids will be carried out to ensure that establishments stick to the rules, and licences may be revoked for flouting the law.

These measures are a reflection of the increasing problem faced by the Kainchi Dham, as popularity grows, and officials now consider not just crowd control near the temple, but traffic management, business regulation and safeguarding of the environment and its infrastructure.
