Chhattisgarh: A fast-track special court in Chhattisgarh's Durg district has sentenced a 24-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of his six-year-old niece.
Delivering the verdict within 17 months of the crime, Additional Sessions Judge Anish Dubey called it a "rarest of rare" case, sentencing Somesh Yadav to death by hanging under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Girl Went Missing During Kanya Pujan
The incident occurred in April 2025. The victim had gone to her grandmother's house in Om Nagar Urla for the traditional 'kanya pujan' ritual during Chaitra Navratri. When she did not return home by evening, her family searched the area and subsequently filed a missing person report at the Mohan Nagar Police Station.
Body Recovered From Car Boot
Police later recovered the child's body from the boot of a nearby parked car. She had scratch marks on her face and blood on her lips. Forensic and DNA analysis confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted by her paternal uncle, Somesh Yadav. She later suffered cardiac arrest due to the severe physical pain and trauma caused during the assault, the report added.
To destroy evidence and mislead the police, Yadav poured toilet cleaner on the victim's private parts before hiding her body in a neighbour's car.
