Three people were killed, and one person was critically injured after a speeding BMW crashed on Mumbai’s Coastal Road during the early hours of Sunday.
The incident took place at around 5:20 am on the Coastal Road, opposite Lala College, near Lotus Jetty. According to the Coastal Road Control Room, a black BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when it met with an accident due to overspeeding. The four injured people were taken to Nair Hospital for treatment.
An unidentified 20-year-old man was admitted to the trauma ward in critical condition, according to information from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Nair Hospital. The deceased individuals were identified as Shanay Gajjal (21) and Dhirya Seth (17). Another male victim, believed to be aged around 25, was yet to be identified, an official said.
Police have launched an inquiry into the incident. The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58 km high-speed freeway connecting Marine Drive in south Mumbai to the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link.
In a separate incident, at least two people were killed and eight others were injured after a speeding car rammed into pedestrians in Navi Mumbai earlier in the day.
The accident had occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle while cruising at high speed in Taloja Sector 10. The car hit about 10 pedestrians on the road.
Its driver abandoned the vehicle and fled immediately after the crash. A search is underway to trace him. The injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital by the locals.
