In a major infrastructure and safety enhancement move, the Central government has approved a fund of Rs 711.72 crore for the comprehensive upgrade of the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. The 118-km, six-lane highway, which was built at a cost of approximately Rs 9000 crore, has experienced frequent accidents since its inauguration due to incomplete or missing service roads, poorly planned entry and exit ramps and inadequate pedestrian facilities.

Though the Expressway is a major route connecting Bengaluru and Mysuru, it faced criticism over its several segments, especially around Bidadi and Mandya due to poorly designed access points, lack of service roads and inadequate pedestrian facilities, Bangalore Mirror reported. These flaws led to accidents in the past and called for a major infrastructure upgrade.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will execute a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade on the bridge over the next two years. The infrastructure development plan includes constructing 14 new access ramps with toll plazas on both sides to allow toll collection based on distance travelled, thereby benefiting local commuters who currently pay flat fees. Additionally, 22.5 km of service roads will be added, improving connectivity along the expressway, the report added.

Furthermore, seven pedestrian underpasses, three railway overbridges, a flyover near Mysuru’s Manipal Hospital junction, 35 bus shelters, and two truck bays will be constructed. However, no formal start date has been announced yet.

As soon as the upgradation work of Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway is completed, commuters will have to pay toll according to the stretch instead of a uniform fee. Additionally, it will reduce the risk of accidents, traffic congestion and enhance the overall commuter experience.
