The brother of the Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi, who was allegedly killed by Nimisha Priya in 2017 after an overdose of medicine, spoke out as execution of Kerala nurse was postponed following the intervention from ‘Grant Mufti’ of India.

Abdelfattah Mahdi, brother of the deceased Yemeni national, opposed reconciliation and pardon to Nimisha Priya. Pardon from the deceased’s family under the blood money provision of Yemen’s Sharia law was the only option to save Nimisha from execution. Now that the family refuses to forgive the Kerala nurse, her fate hangs in doubt.

The execution of Nimisha Priya was postponed a day before the scheduled date to execute her. While there is no confirmation on how her execution was postponed, a Muslim scholar known as the ‘Grand Mufti of India’, AP Aboobacker Musliyar, is being credited with facilitating the negotiation that brought relief to Nimisha and her family.

The Sunni leader’s representatives met with the family members of Mahdi to discuss the Diyaat, a compensation option to suspend Nimisha’s execution.

"In Islam, instead of killing, there is also a practice of giving Diya (compensation). I requested them to accept Diyaat as the party is ready here for it. There are talks going on about whether my request has to be accepted," the Grand Mufti was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Nimisha Priya, encouraged by her family’s financial situation, moved to Yemen to pursue her career and partnered with Talal in 2014 to open a clinic. She was allegedly abused by Talal, and in 2017, as she attempted to recover her passport from Talal by sedating him, the dose proved fatal, and he died.
