The Supreme Court on Thursday was informed that the execution of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse in Yemen, has been stayed for now and nothing adverse was happening.
Nimisha, hailing from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, has been found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen in July, 2017. The 38-year-old Indian national's execution was scheduled for July 16, but it was postponed following intervention of Indian officials.
The matter was being heard by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.
Representing the Union Government, Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the bench that a new mediator has come forth in the matter.
"What has happened to the execution?" the bench questioned.
The counsel for petitioner organisation 'Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council', informed the apex court that the execution was stayed as of now.
"There is a new mediator who has stepped into the picture,” said Attorney General Venkataramani, adding that "the only good thing is that nothing adverse has happened".

Earlier in August, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that concerted efforts led to the postponement of Nimisha Priya’s execution. It added that India continues to render all possible assistance in the case.
MEA said it is also in touch with some friendly governments as part of efforts to reach a solution in the case.
