Bengaluru News: In response to a surge in house break-ins, the Bengaluru South division police have rolled out a new initiative aimed at enhancing home security for residents. This citizen-centric programme allows individuals who will be away from their homes for more than a day to notify the police, who will then increase patrols around their properties during the night.

The pilot project has been launched to provide targeted supervision in South Bengaluru and will be assessed for its effectiveness. Police officials noted that burglaries have become a growing concern in the city. Statistics reveal that Bengaluru recorded 879 night-time break-ins in 2023, with only 264 cases resolved. This is a significant increase from 702 incidents in 2022 and 654 in 2021.

How It Works

To participate in the initiative, residents are required to send a picture of their locked homes to the Bengaluru South control room by calling 080-22943111 or 9480801500. The control room will compile a daily list of these properties, which will be distributed to all 18 police stations in South Bengaluru. Hoysala patrol vehicles will then include these homes in their night patrols.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Lokesh B Jagalasar explained that this initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, who will evaluate its success before considering a wider rollout. "Our goal is to ensure no house is left unattended. Prevention is better than detection," Jagalasar stated.

Currently, police officers identify locked homes during morning patrols and relay this information to night patrol teams, a process that can leave many houses unmonitored.
