The National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) is set to take a major step to alleviate the problem of traffic jams at national highway toll plazas by implementing the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. The initiative will make it possible for toll tax collection without having to stop at a toll booth.
Under the new MLFF system, drivers will not be permitted to use a FASTag associated with another vehicle. If any misuse of this type occurs, the FASTag would be blacklisted. Additionally, authorities have made it clear that the number plate of the vehicle will not be modified, and all numbers must be entered correctly for compatibility with the system.

NHAI believes MLFF will significantly reduce traffic jams and improve travel efficiency. In Agra alone, there are more than half a dozen toll plazas.
These toll plazas mainly include:
- Jaipur Highway
- Gwalior Highway
- New Southern Bypass
- Agra-New Delhi Highway
- Agra-Etawah Highway
- Hathras Road
A new toll plaza is also expected to begin operations soon on the Northern Bypass. Heavy traffic congestion at the tolls creates long lines of cars backed up, resulting in wasted fuel and time delays.

According to officials from NHAI, the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system has been developed to provide a smoother experience through the tolls, allowing vehicles to travel without stopping.
The technology identifies both the FASTag and the vehicle’s number plate, making it mandatory for FASTags to be used only on the vehicle to which they are linked. Any tampering with number plates could also attract action.
Officials said all MLFF trials conducted so far have been successful. The system was first tested at Choryasi toll plaza in Gujarat and has since been introduced at more than two dozen toll plazas in Tamil Nadu.
How MLFF Works
The MLFF system uses AI-based number plate recognition cameras along with FASTag technology. Sensors installed at toll points quickly scan the FASTag or read the vehicle’s registration number, enabling automatic toll deduction without requiring vehicles to stop.
