Noida traffic police launched a 15-days-long drive to identify the vehicle owner who is defying pollution control norms in the district. Officials on Tuesday informed that strong action will be taken against the violators of GRAP norms. GRAP stands for Graded Response Action Plan for Delhi and NCR, comprising of policies to mitigate the rising pollution in the national capital and surrounding area.
Six teams have been set up to carry out inspections at various locations in Noida and Greater Noida. These teams, operating under the supervision of the assistant commissioner of police in their respective zones, will impose penalties on owners utilizing end-of-life vehicles. Additionally, the drive will involve checking the pollution and fitness certificates of the vehicles, The Times of India reported.
“Vehicles exceeding their end-of-life tenure will be seized,” Anil Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Noida, said.
Actions will be taken against violators under the provisions of the Air Quality Management Act 75. The updated GRAP guidelines, issued in July of this year, underscore the severe concern over pollution levels in Delhi-NCR, prompting their implementation in NCR districts from October 1. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is promoting several measures, including the preference for hybrid or electric vehicles over fuel-based ones, ensuring proper engine tuning, turning off engines at stoplights, maintaining tire pressure, and keeping the vehicle's Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate up to date.
Earlier today, Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was registered in the 'moderate' category, while the minimum temperature settled at 17.3 degrees Celsius, slightly dropping 7 degrees in the day, as per officials. The minimum temperature departed about 1 degree from the normal on Tuesday.
