Union Home Minister Amit Shah Called the chief ministers Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim as floods sweep northeastern states after intense rains affecting nearly half a million, with Assam alone having over 4 lakh affected. Shah assured them of all the necessary support to deal with the situation.
Shah also talked to the governor of Manipur. In a post on X, Shah said, "Spoke with the chief ministers of Assam, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and the governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation".
Several parts of Northeast are reeling with floods while flood-like situations are developing in several other parts. Nearly, 30 people have died in the first spell of rains and floods across the northeast.
Assam
In Assam, over four lakh people have been affected by the flood that is a permanent issue for the state during the monsoon.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) rescued fourteen people trapped in the swollen Bomjir river on Assam-Arunachal Border on Sunday.
The heavy rain and flood brought the normal life to a halt with road and rail services disrupted in Guwahai, Dibrugarh, among 20 districts. The worst hit district is Lakhimpur. The death toll due to the floods rose to 10 in the state.
The Brahmaputra River also continued to swell as rainfall continued on Sunday. As relief camps have been set up in districts, 791.32 hectares of crop-land submerged in first spell of floods.
State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local administration are engaged in rescue operations in the flood-affected areas.
Sikkim
The rainfall continued to lash Sikkim on Sunday causing surge in Teesta River water level. Overnoght the upper regions of the state witnessed heavy rainfall, cloudburst worsening the conditions. The IMD has issued red alert for Mangan district while an orange alert has been issued for Gyalshing, Namchi, Soreng, Gangtok, and Pakyong.
The incessant rainfall led to the suspension of search for nine passengers who plunged into the river on Friday. Over 1,500 tourists are stranded in Sikkim due to adverse weather.
Arunachal Pradesh
In Arunachal, torrential rains triggered landslide while swelling Brahmaputra River worsened the flood conditions.
In Arunachal, over 60,000 people have reportedly been affected while over 10,000 have been displaced.
Tripura
In Tripura, 1,300 families took shelter in the government-run relief camps across West Tripura district as floods swept part of the state following two-days of incessant rainfall.
The state is expected to receive rainfall till June 4 prompting IMD to issue flash floods and landslide alert
Manipur
Heavy rains have caused flood and landslide which have affected over 3,800 people and damaged 883 houses in last 48 hours.
According to the IMD forecast, the state will continue to witness rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm throughout the next week. However, the intensity of rain will lower with the proceeding week. On June 2, all districts will receive heavy rainfall.
