A notorious criminal and his accomplice were arrested by police after an encounter in Nuh but a large group of people, who gathered from the village nearby, allegedly scuffled with the police and "freed" him, officials said on Thursday.

People from Ghuspethi village allegedly used sticks and rods and vandalised the cars of the criminal and the police on Wednesday night, they said.

"Police teams are conducting raids to nab the notorious criminal Shahid alias Advani, who will be arrested soon. Shahid is a notorious criminal and gangster operating in the Nuh district. He is associated with a highly organised criminal network involved in several serious offenses," a Nuh police spokesperson said.

In the chaos, a villager also claimed that police and "gau rakshaks" shot him, police said. He was taken to the hospital where he was found fit, they said.

Shahid's accomplice Waris was arrested as additional force was called to the village. A country-made pistol was recovered from Waris's possession. Both Shahid and Waris are from Kharkhari village in Nuh district.

Three people were booked, including a person who cops claimed made a misleading claim against the police team in the FIR registered at Sadar Tauru police station.

According to the complaint filed by Sub Inspector Mahender Singh, he and his team were patrolling at IMT, Rojka Meo, when they received information that Shahid and Waris were heading towards Ghuspethi via Jharna to carry out a crime.

Near Ghuspethi, the police team stopped an SUV and approached it. People in the car, however, fired directly at the police party, he added.

"After this, a policeman fired a shot in the air and asked the accused to surrender, but they fired at the police again. I then fired a shot toward the feet of the person sitting in the driver's seat. The accused got out of the vehicle and started running away and both Advani and Waris were nabbed," the SI said.

The SI said that by then a large crowd had gathered at the spot. One of them claimed that police had shot a villager and the group then engaged in a scuffle with the police team.
The villagers allegedly freed Shahid from police custody, he said in his complaint.
