Outrage Over College Student's Self-Immolation In Odisha
On Tuesday, massive outrage broke out after the 20-year-old girl, who set herself ablaze, died in the Bhubaneswar AIIMS. From Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to BJD chief Patnaik, all Opposition leaders attacked the government. Gandhi and Patnaik termed the incident an "organised murder by the system". The father of the victim held members of her college's Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) "solely responsible" for his daughter's death, accusing them of preparing a "biased report" in connection with her allegation, which led her to set herself on fire on the campus on July 12. The opposition parties called for a Odisha bandh on July 17.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Vows Justice
Reacting to the death of the student, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief and asserted that all culprits will face the strictest punishment.
What Is The Case?
The second-year Integrated B.Ed student set herself ablaze shortly after coming out of the principal's chamber of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. She alleged inaction over her complaint against the professor before taking the extreme step. In her complaint, she accused the professor of sexually assaulting her. She had suffered 95 per cent burns in the self-immolation. The student was first admitted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital and then shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she died after battling for live for three days.
"The patient was on mechanical ventilation. Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management, including renal replacement therapy at the Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 pm on July 14," the AIIMS Bhubaneswar's Department of Burn Centre said in a statement on Tuesday.
