Two teachers, including the headmaster of a government high school in Odisha’s Balasore district, have been detained in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of a Class 9 student, police said on Monday. Officers from Raibania police station took the accused into custody from their residences shortly after midnight on Sunday, following a complaint filed by the girl’s family on Saturday.
The complaint alleges that the school’s mathematics teacher in Charmar Gaon molested the student on multiple occasions. Despite informing the headmaster, no action was reportedly taken.
“They were detained and are being questioned,” Inspector-in-charge Lopamudra Panda said.
Investigation is currently underway.
In a separate incident, The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has suspended its Odisha unit president, Udit Pradhan, following his arrest in a high-profile sexual assault case that has sparked public outrage and political controversy across the state. The suspension comes as the organisation faces mounting pressure over the conduct of one of its key student leaders.
Earlier in the day, Odisha Police arrested Pradhan in connection with the alleged rape of a 20-year-old college student in Bhubaneswar. According to the Commissionerate Police, Pradhan, an influential figure in the student wing of the Indian National Congress, was taken into custody after a preliminary investigation. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night at a hotel in Mancheswar, where the victim was allegedly given an intoxicating substance in her drink before being assaulted.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered based on the victim’s complaint. “There has been an allegation by a girl student about being drugged and then raped in a hotel by Udit Pradhan,” said an official. An FIR has been filed at Mancheswar Police Station, and the accused has been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.
