Odisha Weather: Two separate pressure systems have developed in the Bay of Bengal, raising chances of cyclone formation. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that neither system is expected to have any direct impact on Odisha.
The low-pressure area near the Strait of Malacca intensified into a deep depression late Tuesday night and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic circulation by late this evening as it moves west-northwestwards. The cyclonic storm, which will be named ‘Cyclone Senyar’, is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain to several south Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
According to the IMD, the depression over the Malacca Strait has intensified into a low pressure area and then into a deep depression. It is likely to strengthen further by this afternoon. Meteorologists said that this deep depression is gaining strength as it moves towards the central Bay of Bengal, but there is no clarity yet about its possible landfall.
Sri Lanka Has Another Pressure
Meanwhile, another circulation has developed in the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka and the surrounding Indian Ocean region. This depression is also strengthening and moving north-northwestward. It is likely to intensify into a marked low pressure area and later into a depression within the next 24 hours.
IMD models indicate that this second depression will also strengthen, but its path is unlikely to move directly toward Odisha. Both depressions are being monitored closely, but current forecasts consistently place Odisha outside the potential impact zone.
Odisha To Remain Dry
Despite the talks about the cyclone, the weather is likely to remain dry in Odisha for the next one week. The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar said that there may be clouds at some places, but stable weather will prevail in most parts of the state.
Dry weather will prevail across the state till December 2. Night temperatures are likely to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next two days. IMD also said that fog is the only immediate warning at present.
