The Jammu Kashmir National Conference, which emerged victorious in the recently concluded Jammu Kashmir Assembly Election 2024, on Thursday elected Omar Abdullah as the leader of the legislature party. The unanimous decision by NC legislatures paved the way for Omar Abdullah to become the Chief Minister of the Union Territory for the second time. "A meeting of the legislature party was held where everyone unanimously chose Omar Abdullah as its leader," Omar Abdullah's father and NC Chief Farooq Abdullah said.

The decision came after all the newly elected MLAs of the National Conference met at party headquarters Nawa-i-Subah to elect their leader in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. The NC emerged as the single largest party in the assembly polls with 42 seats. NC's partners Congress (6) and CPI(M) (1) won seven seats in total, taking the total number of seats won by INDIA Bloc to 49, three above the majority mark, in the 90-member Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, according to a report by NDTV, four independents who won the elections, have extended their support to the National Conference, taking the total tally of NC to 46. Omar Abdullah earlier had said that several independent candidates were in touch with his party. "Independent candidates are talking to us, they will join us so our lead would go up," Omar Abdullah had said, as qoted by ANI.

Earlier, Omar Abdullah claimed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have rejected the ideals of the saffron party. “Clearly, it (the mandate) was not in favor of that decision. Had it been, then the BJP would have won. The majority of the people of J-K have not endorsed what was done on August 5, 2019. That is a fact. We were not consulted, and we were not part of that decision. But we will now move forward and see what we can do,” Abdullah said, as per quoted by PTI.

This was the first legislative election since the abrogation of Article 370, and each political party had their claims before the polls. While the BJP claimed that the people of the region are happy with the decision and they will vote for the party, most of the regional forces, including the NC, claimed that the people are dissatisfied with the abrogation of Article 370 and they want the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
