Operation Sindoor Anniversary: Operation Sindoor marked a significant shift in India's strategy toward managing cross-border terrorism. The operation, which combined precision military strikes with comprehensive diplomatic and economic measures, completely transformed India's approach to countering terrorism.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

The escalation was triggered by a terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. During the incident, three assailants opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians, the majority of whom were tourists.

Operation Sindoor

In the early hours of May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor, a large-scale offensive with coordination between the Army, Navy and Air Force. This joint-service operation targeted nine specific militant locations situated across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), marking a significant shift in India's response towards cross-border attacks.

The Indian government described the strikes as targeted, restrained, and non-escalatory. It clarified that the operation was limited to dismantling terrorist infrastructure and did not aim to target any Pakistani military installations.

Operation Sindoor was carried out with extreme precision, signalling a strategic balance of intent and restraint.

Suspension Of Indus Water Treaty

Parallel to the military response, New Delhi initiated swift diplomatic measures, most notably the temporary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. This move was widely interpreted as a toughening of India's stance on bilateral agreements amid persistent security concerns.

Visa Services For Pakistanis Suspended

Additionally, India suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals, cancelling all existing visas with effect from April 27, 2025, with medical visas remaining valid only until April 29.

The government issued an advisory, urging Indian citizens to avoid travelling to Pakistan and calling for those already in the country to return home immediately. Together, these measures made India's response multifaceted, not limited to military action.

Ceasefire

The strike triggered an immediate and sharp escalation of tensions between the two countries, characterised by cross-border firing, aerial engagements, and missile activity. For several days, both sides remained on high alert.

Tensions eased somewhat on May 10, 2026, following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two nations. An agreement was reached to cease military activities from 5:00 PM IST, establishing a fragile peace.

However, the impact of the brief conflict left a lasting impression on both countries.
