At least 341 government-run primary schools in Gujarat were operating with a single classroom each as of December 2023, according to Education Minister Kuber Dindor. The state minister also stated that more than 1,400 posts of administrative officers and 1,459 posts of class-1 and class-2 officers in the state Education Department were lying vacant.

Gujarat Education Minister Kuber Dindor was responding to queries raised by Congress MLA Kirti Patel during the Question Hour of the ongoing Budget session in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Congress lawmaker Kirti Patel accused the ruling BJP of neglecting the quality of education in the state while citing a report that showed poor performance of Gujarat’s primary school students in reading and writing skills.

"The BJP government is good at only doing publicity and projecting Gujarat as a model state while the reality is different. As per the Performance Grading Index Report of 2023, nearly 25 per cent of children studying in primary schools in Gujarat can't even read Gujarati while 47.20 per cent can't read English. Gujarat was not in the top five states which performed well in terms of education," said Kirti Patel.
