The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended a Pakistani Ranger along the India-Pakistan international border in Rajasthan, official sources said on Saturday. The Ranger was taken into custody by the Rajasthan frontier unit of the BSF. Authorities have yet to disclose the Ranger’s identity or the specific circumstances of the detention, news agency PTI reported, citing sources.

This incident follows the detention of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw by Pakistani Rangers on April 23 in Punjab. His detention occurred amid escalating tensions triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. Despite strong diplomatic protests from India, Pakistan has not returned the BSF jawan.

Efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of Shaw. A senior officer noted that previous accidental crossings were usually resolved quickly, but the current geopolitical strain appears to be delaying resolution. The Pakistani establishment is believed to be carefully evaluating its position given the heightened tensions.

In response to the situation, BSF has issued strict advisories to its personnel to remain alert and avoid unintentional border crossings. Farmers working near the international border have also been urged to exercise caution during their daily activities.

Accidental crossings of the border by troops or civilians are not uncommon. Such cases are typically resolved through formal flag meetings between the two forces, after which individuals are usually returned to their country. However, the current political atmosphere has complicated the usual protocols.
