Parliament Monsoon Session: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government on Wednesday asserted that terrorists operating in Jammu & Kashmir will either land in jail or be sent to "Jahannum (Hell)". While responding to parliamentary queries related to the recent spike in terror-related incidents in the union territory, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, claimed that around 900 terrorists have been eliminated in J-K since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
In his reply to a supplementary question posted by Congress MP Pramod Tiwari in the Rajya Sabha, Rai said, "They (terrorists) will not succeed in their design. In the past few days, 28 terrorists have been killed in J&K. Some security personnel have also lost their lives, which is very unfortunate."
The minister also said that between 2004 and 2014, when the Congress-led UPA was in power at the Centre, there were 7,217 incidents of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. In contrast, there have been only 2,259 such incidents since the BJP was first voted to power in 2014, Rai said. Reiterating the stance of the successive BJP governments on terrorism, Rai stated, "Modi government has zero tolerance for terrorism. We will end terrorism. They (terrorists) will be either in jail or jahannum... I want to assure the House."
He stated, "People in Jammu and Kashmir are now living in a peaceful environment and there is a full guarantee of security." The minister added, "In 2023, 2 crore 11 thousand tourists have visited Jammu and Kashmir. Peace has been restored there, which is why tourists are increasing." In 2019, the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
